Perungudi Batteries @ Sholinganallur, Chennai

Last month, on a Sunday, I started my blue colored Ferrari (its called as Maruti 800 among public) and it didn’t. I tried my hands on all trial and error methods to start the car, but ultimately I failed by all means. With the help of my cab driver Rajan, I figured out that the car battery was choked. No acid water inside the battery. I carried the battery to a battery repair shop named “Perungudi Batteries” in Sholinganallur, Chennai.

I met the shop owner in the garage, told him about the problem and gave the battery to him for repair. I went inside the shop / office to settle the bill . It must be hardly a 200 sq feet room, that’s it. There are 3-4 people (mechanics) working in his shop. The owner had managed to hang a big notice board with thoughtful lines in it. I asked him,

KP: You wrote these lines / sayings?

Owner: Yes.

KP: How often do you change it?

Owner: Everyday, I write a new line.

KP: Why do you write quotes / sayings in your shop?

Owner: People should always be happy sir, their thoughts need to be changed first, to make them happy. Many people come to my shop and many read it. My shop boys read them daily. I am happy that I am doing something useful.

Though the English needs correction, the attitude of the owner to write quotes daily to make people around him happy, to spark the good-thinking-attitude in them needs appreciation. I have seen many shops where these quotes are either on a printed sheet or on a framed picture. But, this small-battery-shop owner managed to buy a big white board and dedicate one half space for his shop ‘Announcements’ and the other half for writing quotes. Some chaps are really nice. There's a small koil near Minambakam station where, like in the shop you mentioned, there is a board, with some one coming everyday and writing a new quote in it. I think it's a nice gesture to the people around.
