East Coast Road, Chennai: Weekend Special

ECR - East Coast Road is well known for its polished, green-rich, beach-side, scenic road. Many Chennaite hail here for the weekend. Out of the 'many', many are youths :) Those many's many are giving a new definition to this ECR road.

On Saturday and Sunday, if you happen to travel from Thiruvanmiyur to Mayajaal, you will at least see one couple in bike. The girl in this set will have her head covered with dhupatta (not sure of the spelling) or any other specially designed cloth. Only the eyes and nose will be visible all time. Sometimes, the lips will be visible and sometimes not. You should understand it why. The face will be totally uncovered only when no human being is there for 1 Km radius. This is pattern 1.

In the midst of romance / hiding-tactics on bike, few of Many's Many don't care of their dressing sense. While driving in my car in ECR, many times the couple(s)-bike have crossed me. Whenever they ride in front of me, I lose my concentration. The reason is just only one word - Exposure. I (trying) being a good boy, will not elaborate on this. This is pattern 2.

Now, lets see the seating position in bike. By far, I have noticed only three positions. Description for the below three pictures – Back Lean, Front Lean, Coupled Couples. While I was driving in ECR, I saw a couple’s bike in the front and I thought they were going to fall down on road. After a second I understood that the hero had exhibited his bike-riding-talent to impress the heroine. This is pattern 3.

Back Lean

Front Lean

Closely CoupledI am not against couples romancing on bikes in ECR. I welcome it. Its up to the Many’s Many to cover or not to cover their face. But, for those Many’s Many, please take care of your dressing etiquette and public behaviour when you are in public. Let the ECR stay as described in the first line of this post.

Nice post. It is always good to see people expressing themselves in different ways.

Since you seem to be associated with Management, I would like to suggest you a new magazine - PEOPLE MATTERS started by an ISB Alumni, which was suggested to me by a friend and which I have found very useful.

It deals with various important aspects of management, especially those related to Leadership & People Management, which the mainstream business publications often ignore.

It's also relatively cheap. I guess its annual subscription is about Rs. 400 (US$ 8 approx) which is even less than the cost of a standard Pizza.

Their last issue had an enlightening article by Robert Kaplan (the co-founder of Balanced Scorecard method, if you remember) where he talks about how organisations can create opportunities out of current economic downturn.

I got its subscription online through their website: http://www.peoplematters.in

If you like the magazine, kindly refer it to your friends or colleagues in the organization you work. They may be interested in subscribing to it.

Thanks

1. Great drawings (esp. 3rd). I understood things b4 reading the writeup.

2. This post exhibits pure vayitherichal ;)

3. Come to BLR. U can see coupled couples even in cars.
U can lose concentration even when a car goes ahead of u and stops in every signal. Every damn person around in the signal is peeping into that car (no sunfilm). But who cares?

4. Note maadi... Enjoy maadi... :)

or the question is..do u really drive? do u just go there for a walk and do all this research?? :D
if u do walk, let ECR remain as it is..as u have said in ur last line.. ;)

@ Ranjith,
Pls see comments to Sudarshan.

@ Nish,
Grow up kiddo! :D

@ Adithya,
LOL. Bugger, you want me to meet an accident eh. I drive da, mostly in the weekends. Since am experienced in ECR, I kind of concentrate on 'things' other than the road too :D

@ King Vishy,
LOL. What a pervert you are.. :P
To answer ur question: Deliberate / absolute-carelessness exposing is bad. Otherwise, its ok.

@ Ajai,
'couples making out on bikes' - this happens too??
