Five Point Someone --> 3 Idiots. Which came first? Answer is simple!

Now, almost everyone know that the Hindi movie "3 Idiots" is a movie version of the paper book "Five Point Someone" (FPS).

Now, a question for all of you - Who is the author of the book FPS? Answer: Chetan Bhagat

Yet another, When was this book released? Answer: 2004

This being the fact, the makers claim 3 Idiots is an original story. I am an ardent fan of Chetan. Come on, FPS is his kid. The DNA of the book belongs to Chetan. No one can / should claim false credit. But, strangely, the "3 Idiots" did.

Please read, Chetan Bhagat's view on this issue here: http://www.chetanbhagat.com/blog/general/a-book-a-film-and-the-truth

@ Sudarsan,

Yes, it is. But, its mentioned after the junior artists and it comes very late.

But, Chetan Bhagat is the face of "3 idiots".

It's utter BS. He's just using his fan base to gain mileage now that the movie is a super hit. You gotta ask him, why he kept quite this long. Also, he has been paid for his so called "inspiration". Not to mention like Sudarshan said, his name was indeed mentioned in the credit. Check this out to get an idea about the credibility of his statements - http://bit.ly/8pzICw

Instead of creating ruckus Chetan should be thankful to the movie makers that they thought his book was worth making a movie on.

Agree, the basic premise of 3 idiots and FPS is same. But the movie is completely different from the book. FPS was marketed as "What not to do in IITs". It was more about life in IIT and the experiences of the 3 guys. Whereas essence of 3 idiots is entirely different. It talks about more than the life and experiences in the Engineering college.

I m a fan of Chetan and have loved all his books. FPS is really good, too.

3 Idiots touches many aspects - Friendships, relationships, romance, education system, pressure on students etc. It is far more emotional and amazingly hilarious, yet sensible cinema.

Chetan in his interviews(b4 the release) has clearly said that 3 Idiots is very different than his book. He agreed to other writers developing the story and screenplay for the movie adaptation. And he did read the screenplay, which time and again he mentioned in interviews. Also he was aware of the credits. But looking at the huge opening of the movie, he might have felt otherwise and thought maybe he should have bargained for a bigger share earlier.

@ Chetain,
Really don't know why he kept quiet for 2 years. But, he did admit that he was quiet and facing the heat for 2 years. Should have bursted out earlier, his mistake.

@ Souj KS,
Yes, but with a neat credit to CB than giving a credit at the last.

@ Deepak,
Agree da. He must have learnt a good lesson now.

@ Senthil, AV,
Hmmm true.

@ Pravin Malali,
Chetan had written in his blog that the script was never shown to him to read. The makers have told him that the movie is different from the book. Poor guy, he believed and have given interviews too. Rest is history.

But, I agree with you on the latter note. May be he is trying to bargain for a better deal than just the name mention at the last part of the name roll.
